Imagination.
Players (best with a total of DM and 3-5 players, I think)
Books (Player's Handbook if a player, more if DM)
Dice (You'll eventually end up with more, but 1 w/20 sides, called a d20, d12, d8, d6, and d4. A pair of d10, one marked with 10s, and one marked in units of 1s is needed as well.)
Pencil and Paper
Miniatures (even if just pennies or chess pieces)
A grid of 1" squares
That's all that's needed for the current version of D&D. There is lots more that you can use to play, including preprinted adventures, many books, preprinted grids, figures, etc. but this is all that's needed.

You need to get a set of polyhedral dice
that meas a 20, a 12, two 10s for the percentile function, an 8, a 6, and a 4.
As a Dungeon Master (DM) you need the Dungeon Masters Guide, The Monster Manual, and The Player's Handbook. Of these books the most important is The Player's Handbook.
Then you need some extra paper to make up characters and draw maps on. If you are the DM you need to have a story or module ready to play.
And most importantly you need at least 2 players and a DM. More players is better up to eight is about all most DMs can handle at a time.
There are lots of support groups that will give you lots of ideas for the game on the web. Including ones on Yahoo.
Wizards of the Coast is about to release version 4 of the game so be aware that soon all of the other versions will not be supported. If you choose to play an older version then EBay is a good place to find books and miniatures.
Happy gaming.

Its been awhile since I played, but you either can buy the starter set, which includes everything you need (except for paper and pencil).
You do need at least one other person, but its better if you have two or more people besides yourself.
D and D uses dice to resolve everything, from combat, to saves, to who attacks first. You will need at least 3 six sided dice, but there are many other special dice (4-sided, eight sided, twenty-sided, twelve sided) that are used at time. The 20 sided is the most commonly used dice after the six sided.
Most people buy the books (there are several), which includes a players book, a book for the dungeonmaster (who runs the adventure), along with any supplements such as a monster book.
You can either create your own dungeon, but most DMs (dungeon master) start out with a adventure module that you can buy. After a little experience you can create your own.
If theres a comic or hobby shop in your town, pay a visit, they can show you first hand.

Ah, starting to play? Well, the basics are:
One Dungeon Master (Or "DM") and three or more players (For a good game, but more or less is fine.)
Character sheets and pencils with erasers
Enough dice for everyone, so at least two or three sets, including a lot of d20s
A Players Handbook and Monster Manual, and a Dungeon Masters guide is recommended but not required.
A white board or large sheet of paper, blank or with one inch squares, and pencils or dry erase markers
Tokens or miniatures to mark character and enemy positions. More advanced people might even use plastic 3D sets. On a white board these aren't needed, as characters can be marked using letters and colored dots
Most importantly, plenty of imagination! Have fun!

All you really need is a dm and 3-5 players
paper and pencil
a players handbook (unless you're the dm)
imagination
a twenty sided die, a six sided die, a four sided die, an eight sided die, and a ten sided die.
After that you just set a time and make sure your dm has acampaign and you're good to go.

One person called the gamemaster. The gamemaster leads the players through the adventures. Knowledge of the system would be useful but it isn't required.
