Symbols are constantly taking on new meaning. Just a few years ago a red star was the symbol of USSR.

The swastika, a symbol of the Nazis was in use by other cultures for different things.

The skull and cross bones was once a Christian symbol for mortality.

The typical star used by anarchists is a five-pointed star half-red/half-black, divided diagonally. I believe that this is particularly identified with anarcho-syndicalism.
