Yeah, for better or worse, Saddam did keep a lid on the sectarian violence and outside influences of terrorism too because he didn't want their ilk to upset his regime. The only one I can think of offhand that has gone through the same kind of CIA 'leadership' training is Osama bin Laden. No... even I can't make the stretch that this was Bush's plan all along.

Saddam was a mass murderer. Not the best qualification for a leader.
The problems in Iraq will not be solved by outside forces in a few years.
Before the occupation, families had Sunni/Shiite marriages and friendships. Now families have been torn apart and the divide is the deepest it has ever been.
The Kurds thought they had it figured out with the creation of "Kurdistan". Until Turkey started bombing them recently.
I don't know the answer to a problem that has existed for 1000 years. But I do know killing is not the answer. Nor is shoving western culture into people who don't want it, understand it or agree with it.
Pray for peace.

Well, Saddam killed a lot of people himself. Unfortunately, the groups were forced together for so long, I doubt a new Saddam would have a chance until the civil war winds down.

We should just install a king of Iraq and give him weapons and money to be our ally and control the population with an iron fist. This is what we do with many of our other dictator allies anyway, and would be much cheaper than what we are spending now...not to mention less costly as far as american lives.
The bottomline is we want to a) control oil flow, and b) control radical islam in iraq. A king of iraq can do both of those things for us....and we can give him all sorts of money and weapons to keep the dissenters down and out.
What was that guy's name? Chalabi?

I'd say the first one who rises up and actually takes over.
No one has done it or attempted yet.
They are holding out and allowing the US military to be offed.
To the delight of the al qeada.
