Your nose filters out dirt and dust through your nose hair and mucus. The filtered out dirt gets trapped in the mucus which dries into boogers. Then you pick them and eat them, I mean you blow them out.

Scientific explanation:
Inside your nose are millions of tiny hairs (some ppls are larger, longer and more visible than others). When you breathe in through your nose, these hairs filter the air and tiny dust, pollen, dirt, etc particles are trapped by the hair and kept out of your lungs. Also inside your nose and throat are mucous membranes. These membranes normally just keep the inside of your body wet and moist so you aren't too dehydrated. This wetness also helps the dust particles cling to your nose hairs. When you get too much particle buildup on your nose hairs, boogers are formed.
Snot, on the other hand, is formed when you are sick and your mucous membranes produce too much liquid. When this snot dries up in your nose, once again, you have boogers.
Isn't science class fun? ;)

There is no purpose to them. They are actually the rubbish and dust from the air around you that has collected in you nose all day. If you go to a really dirty and polluted area you will see how much dirtier the inside of your nose is than any other normal day

I learned this in Biology a long time ago and I believe its true that you body makes it to protect your nose from germs and harmful particles. It acts as a filter to the stuff that you breath in. Like it will catch dust particles and debree from entering in your body. So any disgusting person that would eat his/hers is really eats all sorts of "stuff". Hope that helps!

They trap dirt and harmful bacteria from getting in. Also, when you have a runny nose it's your body's way of flushing out the germs.

i think bogies are just bits of dust and dirt that get sucked up when you breathe and they stick to a mucas base inside your nose and then form into like jelly balls.
