Unfortunately, the alarm is the best way to go. If the person wants to break in they'll test the house and determine when you're not home. Then, without an alarm they can just pry open a window or break it.
Other than an alarm, you may want to add security motion-sensor lights to the exterior of the home and possibly upgrade your windows/doors to something sturdier.

There are lots of options. Install a movement activated light to cover the dark areas of the exterior.. About $29.95 each at home depot. Install a motion activated sprinkler and aim it towards the area in question. (they are used to scare dogs and cats out of yards but work well on prowlers too..about $30.00 at most building supply or pet stores. A dog...free in the papers. A do it yourself alarm system runs from about $65.00 to around $300.00....most electronic or home improvment stores. A fake closed circuit tv camera with lit LCD light. looks like the real thing mounted under the eaves or along the roof line of the area you want to cover..available at most electronic stores or online for around $30.00. A timer that turns lights, a radio and or a tv on and off in different parts of the house at random times you set up...around $15.00 each at most home improvement stores. Remember too that once they try, they usually come back again.
Hope this helps

Do you have a dog?if so let the dog be in th house when you are away. That's my security.I live alone and have dead bolts on all my doors.I also have a sliding bar lock that allows me to open my door a little and it holds it tight. They sell bars for the sliding glass doors. Also they have a bar that you put under your door knob,it works.I seen it in action once. The person was locked out and I put the bar in place,it kept him out.I worked for them and seen that work.Sensor lights also work, when they turn on the thieves run away....

get some silly string and put it at the door along with some pepper spraytie them to a string and when the little **** opens the door you will get them double time. Also, you could leave a boom box next to the door and get a sensor and turn it on when they come to the door. with cans dangling from the door.
