but most of the rich don’t have insurance, either?

My second question: Do the uninsured still receive good medical treatment, as most hospitals in the U.S. cannot legally turn down treatment of the sick?

If a Hospital gets funds from the Government they have to treat you but nothing further than the emergency room. A privater Hospital can certainly turn you away.
If one goes to the Emergency without insurance and cannot pay they will put a lien on anything you own. That is what happens to people who have worked all their life and now cannot get insured.I am not rich but am comfortable. i cannot get insurancebecause od diabetis. No insurance company will insure me on this reason. Now the State has to offer insurance but it would cost about "10,000 a year with a high deductable.I have been looking for insurancefor 2 years now.

Read this article. I still don't have insurance, A $385 a month, it's out of reach. I had to file bankruptcy after numerous back surgeries and the insurance I did have at that time wouldn't cover 2 of them. This was back in the early 90's.

You will find that a lot of people who have to file have health insurance.

If you are uninsured but can pay the out-of-pocket expenses of a good hospital, you are going to get good care. Some people have to actually compare prices.

40 million is an estimate that is probably real close to the actual number. I don't have health ins. And, since I have to wait until I get bad enough to go to an ER, I don't get the better medical care as I would if I did have Ins.

yes, don't know and yes (in general).. but here's what your not thinking about.

Prevention.

you spend less money by taking care of people and preventing health problems in a doctors office than you do by taking care of serious issues in an ER after they have occurred... and either way you are paying for it.. so why not pay less?

Prevention saves money in the long run.

You answered you own question. I also would wonder how many of the 40 million are illegal immigrants

Watch the movie "Sicko" and you'll learn a great deal. The husband of one woman who was featured in the movie died, because their insurance company wouldn't pay for a life-saving bone marrow transplant, because the company deemed the surgery "experimental".
