It is because the government, and especially the current regime, allow the pharmaceutical companies to charge whatever they want to. We are the only democratic nation that does not set price controls to regulate these costs, which are bases solely on greed.

If you ask the pharmaceutical companies the reason is because they need to recoup the millions of dollars in research money they put into developing the drug. I can see that to an extent, but I am sure that pockets are well padded along the way.
And it is NOT true that Canada doesn't research medicines. The difference is is that we (canadains) use government money more that corporate money to do so. We also limit the amount chargable for medicines, and/or have pharmacare which supplements the costs of drugs.

There is a high price of medicine in the US because part of the profits go to researching new drugs. Part of the reason I suspect for high costs also is that countries like Canada don't research making us have to research even more. This I think to some degree drives up the cost of research.

Nice question. Why won't our politicians let us order drugs from Canada? Money is the answer! The drug companies (DC) hire lobbyists to hand over suitcases of cash (offshore banks), dinners, cases of wine, cars, vacation homes and so forth to our elected politicians who get the laws the DC wants. If we could buy the drugs from Canada the US tax base as well as the DC would not get as rich as fast.
It is true that most of the drugs are developed and researched for safety here (think China-ugh), but we could continue that even if politicians reduced some of the laws helping the DC. Many people all over the world have bought stock in the DC simply because the DC can't help but make money thanks to our laws.

OK, we all know medicines cost a whole bunch of money but until the government takes over the development, research, testing and distribution of pharma products, it's going to cost money. 96% of all drugs that start down the pipeline from lab to medicine cabinet, don't make it. That's a whole bunch of R&D bucks down the drain. It is estimated that a new drug can cost a company up to $200,000,000 just to make it to market.
Drug companies produce wondrous medicines. But they aren't cheap to produce. And after the patent expires (usually about 10 years) that product is open game for anyone, so they have to recoup their initial investment and make some money for their shareholders.
We are not communists here - companies like Pfizer, GSK and the like are for profit companies.

LOL!! No...
It's because there's no government restrictions. Canada, for example, limits the price that pharmaceutical companies can charge for drugs. Most modern countries do.
In effect, the pharmaceutical companies charge Americans more, partly because they can, and partly to offset their reduced profits coming from other countries (though they're still getting huge profits from those countries)
But the meds themselves are the exact same meds that they market to the rest of the planet. No better, just way more expensive.

Because in other countries the government pays part of the cost. Then again in those countries the taxes are much higher too... I for one don't take any medicines so I'm happy that I'm not helping to pay for someone elses.

No--it's because wwe already have the right-wing version of socialized medicine.
What I mean is this: one version of socialism isn't left-wing at all--it's right-wingand consists of giving total control of industries to favored corporations with access to and the protection of the government (this is technically known as fascism).
That is the kind of "health care" we have now as a result of the neoconservative agenda.
We DON'T need to replace that with a left-wing version of socialized medicine--though that's probably what's going to happen, unfortunately. What we do need is massive reform that will restore the old American health-care system that was once the best on earth--and provided virtually universalhealth care--a mix of public health to support a mstly private system--but one NOT controlled by a few corporations interested in nothing but profit.

There's a cause and affect relationship with how long the drugs have taken to produce as well as the costs of said drugs. Scientists receive millions in grant money a year. There has to be a way to recoup the losses.

I would venture to say that it could be that US companies do all the r&d and that since most other countries have socialistic caps on what can be charged, the pharm companies need to make up for that loss somewhere and that somewhere is here.
