This thing has been eating away at me. I feel terrible about all of our people being stuck over there away from home. I feel I should be making the sacrifice also. What do you think?

If you feel you need to contribute, then you should find the best way that you can. But realize that the military is not for everyone. And it is a sacrifice, one that may cost you your life. Carefully weigh your reasons and make your decision. Good luck.

Many people should be making the sacrifice. It's unfortunate that only a small percentage of Americans choose to join the military. I volunteered and spent over 20 years in the Navy myself, as did my wife, and my brother. Too many people spend their whole lives thinking only about themselves, and doing nothing for the greater good.

Don't join up because you feel terrible about current military members being "stuck over there." Join up because it's the right thing to do. Remember, each and every member of the military is a volunteer. They all joined willingly, just like I did. The press will jump all over the whining of the few who change their minds when the going gets tough, but they are a minuscule percentage.

I wish we had a program like Switzerland or Israel. After high school everyone (male and female) have to serve in the Military for a minimum of 2 years. After wards you can do whatever you want. Think how better off this country would be if everyone was taught the self disciple and sacrifice that only the military can teach? Think of all those lost souls who could find purpose and meaning through the Military. I would put money on the fact that our prison population would be cut in half.

I understand your feelings but this is why we have elected officials to lead us in time of need. You are right in a way, our elected leaders should have called up a draft years ago. If the war on terror is truly as important to the survival of this nation as winning WWII was, asccording to our president. There should have been a draft almost immediately after 911 but there was not because a draft is not politically correct.

So no, do not go overthere, you will just wind up frustrated and angry. You are more valuable and needed here at home than overthere, trust me.

I quit the military in protest when my contract came to an end. Why? Not because I disagree with the war, I am not dying for our leaders who have no honor, no common sense, and have only concerns for their self interest, not the interest of our nation and seem to start wars when ever the fancy strikes them. I am not dying for people like that. I advise others to follow suit.

However, if you want to help out, I suggest donating to various veteran causes and donate what money you can to VA hospitals and the like. When these soldiers come home, they are going to need all the help they can get. Knowing a bit about your beliefs, right occupation or job is important. The military is not in align with this. If you still want to go, may I suggest Chaplin assistant?

How about a draft of the following groups:
1. the children or grandchildren of U.S. politicians.
2 children or grandchildren of anyone earning over $ 250,000.

How long would we be in Iraq then?

I don't feel any obligation to join the military. I think that war is barbaric and would be completely unnecessary if people would be willing to limit consumption, share resources and control their population growth.

They're trespassers on foreign land. Thats what they get for being too cowardly to resist orders, when they get back they should be stuck in prison, and whats the penalty for murder again?!

I made that sacrifice by doing 2 tours in VietNam. I could not imagine doing 4 tours as some of our guys are doing now. But they volunteered and should have known going in what to expect.

That is a personal decision that each person needs to make for him or herself. If you feel that you should paticipate, the join up. This does not mean that anyone else need joim with you.
