assuming you all ready have a good foundation ..until you get above ground level ..use a 7 newton solid concrete block ..first course laid flat to give you a 225mm wide wall then alternate upright and flat until you get out to ground level VERY IMPORTANT build the wall so it has a slight batter ,,this means build the wall so it is not plumb ..it is leaning slightly backwards into the ground where the soil side is ..so if you get pressure on the wall it will only push it upright ..this is the correct way to build a retaining wall ..above ground use either engineering bricks or blue bricks ..4 to 1 mortar ..mixed by weight not by volume

The best way to do it is depending on your finish.
This is what we do:
Lay a 4 inch dense concrete block flat.
This will give you a nine inch concrete wall. If you wanted to use face bricks then incorporate wall ties every two courses and tie the bricks in with this.
Use a 4-1 mix with febmix (not washing up liquid as this will weaken the mix).
Don't forget to include drainage holes. use a piece of guttering downpipe.
Hope this helps

Easy problem, easy solution: (I have a rental house with the exact same configuration.)

1 Meter wall:

Hit home depot, they have special blocks finished on 1 side meant for retaining walls - with a small ridge lip at the back of the block.
Lay the first row on tamped and watered screenings ($30.00 will get you a yard delivered to your driveway) use a string to level screenings first.

After 1st row, 2nd row is installed 1/2" back (where the back of the block lips interlock) and so forth. At 1 meter height, you're wall will angle less than 10".

Don't forget to put crushed stone behind it, and run a few small hoses from the stone through a small space you leave between the blocks. (Drainage is imperative)

Anybody in the Home Depot garden center will be able to draw you a diagram of what you need to do and show you the parts.

Just did a retaining wall and used the faced stone from Lowes. These stones have holes for using rebar to strengthen the wall. I did not rely on stone alone, and set a good foundation base. If you use concrete cinter block, you can even fill the voids with cement to further add strength to the wall. If the wall is decorative only, the faced stone can be put together with simple caulk adhesive. Do not rely on this for a bearing wall.

It feels like you have got probably the most material already ( the stones) now not seeing the project is hard however i will let you know what i'd do. I might purchase 5 or 8, 80lb baggage of cement, a bundel of 6ft grade stakes and ball of twine. I might casting off the stones out of the discipline i was once going to place the brand new wall however now not far away, simply enough to have room to work. When all stones are removed i'd do my best to stage the bottom have been i was once going to construct my new, cemented, stone retaining wall. Utilizing the grade steaks place one within the ground as plum as feasible at one end of the wall were you wish to have the face to be than another on the different finish of the wall have been the face can be now location just a few others within the ground in a straight line from one finish to the other, this is your straight line reffrence and your plumbline refrence the string can be used from one submit to an extra for directing your placement of stone between the post. First layer of higher stone placed simmuler to how you removed them with smaller ones in crevises, than cement to bond them and an extra layer of stone carfully positioned as a way to interlock the two partitions. So to find lengthy stone so as to go from the front wall to the again wall. Always remember that your pilling the stone as flush as posible on the face and as straigh up as possible and interlocking the 2 partitions as you growth upwards. Inbetween the stones use the cement mix to bond them. Use a degree for those who desire or the advisor put up as refference you just do not need the wall too lean frontwards or backwards an excessive amount of. Just hold working your manner alongside the wall with stone and cement. Your effect will seem just like the old wall however bound along side cement. This can be quite a lot of be just right for you and your loved ones or buddies but the end result will likely be so much pleasing. OR buy a the right way to e-book on building holding walls. You have got to keep in mind that it'll take you a number of days of hard work to do this and sometimes its easer to hire anybody else to do the work and in the event that they screw up there responcible but in case you screw up than your going to eat it.

Depending on the height and weight of earth to retain. After laying the footings, it is usually better to use concrete blocks instead of bricks. They can be double skinned or laid flat and when the mortar has 'gone-off' are rock solid. Back fill with a few stones and the earth

Whatever you use don't forget to incorporate weep holes or bits of pipe near the bottom for drainage as wet soil is so much heavier to retain.

whatever you use just make sure you use mortar on them rather than just stacking them up. it will last waaay longer. also, make sure you make a sound foundation for it, one that is solid and below the frost line, preferably concrete. you will want it to slope backwards towards the area to be retained so that it will not simply be pushed over.
