Well, let's see: rat snakes as a rule are pretty relaxed and easy to handle - they don't bite much, settle down quickly and make pretty good pets. Rat snakes are constrictors and eat primarily small mammals, but will also take birds and eggs when the opportunity arises. Black Rats (Elaphe g. guttata) are actually very good tree climbers and commonly raid bird nests. The largest number of mice I ever saw a Black Rat handle at one time was 4: 3 in the coils and 1 in the mouth (I had dropped the snake into a trash can which had about a dozen adult mice in it. Talk about a happy snake!). A bite from a rat snake, even a large Black Rat (I believe they get the longest, at about 4 1/2 or so feet) is not too bad: unlike many snakes, they usually just bite and release. They don't bite repeatedly, they don't hold on and 'gnaw', and they don't take the opportunity to slap nasty, sticky musk around. Generally speaking, very pleasant, very pretty snakes.
