The Cold War was massive build up of weapons by Russia. They wanted to have more weapons in more places so they moved missiles to Cuba which is right in the US back door. This then sparked Kennedy to take action and send spy planes to monitor the build up on Cuba which then resulted in the blockade of Russian ships to Cuba that were carrying weapons. Hope this helped.

The Cold War refers to a period of time that the U.S. and the Soviet Union (now Russia) were engaged in a kind of weapons race. Bothe were building and aiming nuclear missles at each other, claiming the need to be safe from attack by the other. Cuba, at the time was ruled by Fidel Castro, who had overthrown the U.S. puppet leader, Batsita and basically ended a long era of U.S. and Mafia exploitation of the island.
The Soviet Union offered aid to the struggling ecinomy of Cuba after the U.S. began a trade embargo that is still in force today. It was learned that Castro allowed Soviet Missles to be deployed on Cuban soil, and that these missles were aimed at strategic sites in the U.S.
The result was a blockade of Cuba by the U.S. Navy that eventually brought about a peaceful withdrawal of weapons and bases from Cuba.

Even before the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945, the United States and the USSR had become divided over the political future of Poland. Stalin, whose forces had driven the Germans out of Poland in 1944 and 1945 and established a pro-Communist provisional government there, believed that Soviet control of Poland was necessary for his country’s security. This met with opposition from the Allies, and it was not long before the quarrel had extended to the political future of other Eastern European nations. The struggle over the fate of Eastern Europe thus constituted the first crucial phase of the Cold War. Yet during this period, which lasted from 1944 to 1946, both sides clung to the hope that their growing differences could be surmounted and something of the spirit of their earlier wartime cooperation could be preserved.........The Berlin blockade and the spread of Communism in Europe led to negotiations between Western Europe, Canada, and the United States that resulted in the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in April 1949, thereby establishing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Berlin crisis also accelerated the emergence of a state of West Germany, which was formally established in May 1949. (The Communist republic of East Germany, comprising the remainder of German territory, was formally proclaimed in October of that year.) And finally, the Berlin confrontation prompted the Western powers to begin thinking seriously about rearming their half of Germany, despite the divisiveness of this issue among West European........The most serious Cold War confrontation between the United States and the USSR that took place in the Third World—one that raised the specter of nuclear war—occurred in 1962. In the summer of that year, the U.S. government discovered that the Soviets were in the process of deploying nuclear missiles in Communist Cuba. In October the United States moved to block Soviet ships carrying missiles to Cuba. The resulting standoff, during which the world stood seemingly on the brink of ultimate disaster, ended with Khrushchev capitulating to the demands of U.S. president John F. Kennedy. From the Cuban missile crisis both sides learned that risking nuclear war in pursuit of political objectives was simply too dangerous. It was the last time during the Cold War that either side would take this risk.

The "OLD" Soviet Union under Nikita Kruschev's leadership was PUBLICLY PARADING & PROVIDING MISINFORMATION OF THE QUALITY & QUANTITY OF THE SIZE OF THEIR MILITARY, THE QUANTITY & QUALITY OF THIER MILITARY EQUIPMENT & TECHNOLOGY.
Nikita Kruschev knew of our OVERFLIGHTS of our U2 spyplanes for years & was furious they could do nothing about it until the development of the SOVIET UNION's newest SAM MISSILES. THESE MISSILES RESULTED IN THE SHOOTING DOWN OF U.S. U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.
The Unstable & Unpredictable Kruschev paraded the proof of the overflights & violations of Soviet Union air space to the world's MEDIA & before the entire UNITED NATIONS.
IN RETALIATION, he determined to secretly establish Atomic Missile Bases with launch sites on the Island of CUBA.
This resulted in the discovery by the U.S. of the bases & the subsequent CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS which put the world on the verge of Global Annihialation
