There was not a democratic challenger as Clinton was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. George HW Bush was his republican opponent is his first term and Bob Dole was his Republican opponent in the second term. Ross Perot was the reform party candidate and while he probably got Clinton elected in his first term he probably did not effect the outcome of the second election (although Clinton still did not receive 50% of the vote)

George H.W. Bush wasn't in the 1996 race, and besides he isn't a Democrat, like most incumbents Clinton ran unopposed for his parties nomination that year. (Liberals smarter than Conservatives, yeah right)
