I'm not sure where you are from but at 7 months preg I went into pre term labor. I had to go on bed rest for the rest of my pregnancy. I was planning to take FMLA leave (family and medical leave of absence) but when I talked to human resources at my job they told me about short term disabilty. I got a letter from my doc confirming the diagnosis and within 2 weeks a got a check in the mail. The amount you will be paid as well as for how long typically depend on your employment history (how long you've been employed and your position with the company). You need to speak with human resources at you job and find out your options.

Yes, you do have options. Just like any other medical condition, pregnancy qualifies as one, too. If you must be on bedrest, your company should give you temporary disability if you are eligible. And by eligible meaning it's within your contract regarding personal illness, and you're not on probation or anything like that. The thing with temporary disability from a financial standpoint is that you don't get paid very much, and it usually takes a while to kick in.

You should definitely contact a person from Human Resources who can help you with this. If anything, your job should be protected for a certain amount of time if you are unable to work. If you need to be on bedrest for another 4 months, however, they may not be able to hold your job that long by law. [And you'll also need recovery time after giving birth] Find out what your rights are first, and try to make an education decision.

you will have to check out your area laws. Here the answer would be no. I lost my job twice because of pregnancy complications and not being able to work. If your job has disability options (should be in the handbook if you have one) then you can talk to Human Resources at your job. I know it is horrible when you need the money and job but the baby needs you to stay on bedrest. All you can do is check at work and with maybe the social security department. Going on disablity can be very tricky. My mom was on it after a car accident and they actually have detectives follow you around to make sure you really can't work.

Yes. You will need a letter from your doctor including your diagnosis and how long you have to be on bed rest. It takes a up to 3 months for the maternity disability to be approved and depending on the state you live in, the amount of disability.
My doctor told me to stop working but where I live I would only get 50% of my income with the disability so she put me on light strict duty.

Hmm... that might be tough unless you know a doctor willing to sign off on the disability paperwork, and usually they don't want to do that unless you are already there for something else, like an oxycotin prescription. Since you have an art degree, why not seek out a grant to support your art work? I know a Mr. Duck of Scotland who recently set out a grant, though unfortunately it was only for 10 points. But there has got to be others out there. You could declare it performance art, and entitle it "50 Bars in 50 Nights" or something like that.

In the US, pregnancy does qualify under an employers SHORT TERM DISABILITY coverage, if they have it. Not all employers are required to have this in every state. Check with your HR department. If they do not offer it, then short of using vacation time/sick time, and whatever maternity benifits you have, there isn't a way to, unless you have an ultra cool employer. You are entitled to 12 weeks off per calander year under the Family Medical Leave Act, again, if your employer has enough employees to fall under their guidlines. Your best bet is to check with your HR department and then go from there. If you have to go on bed rest, and they don't offer the coverage, you can look into state assistance.

Good luck!

You should check with your company. I am just 10 weeks pregnant and I found out my company does not offer maternaty leave, so I talked with HR and the lady said I qualified for short-term disability for up to 3months. How much money they give you depends on how much you make, I think....Im still getting informed. Its early, but I want to make sure I have everything ready, I cant afford to stop working either...Good Luck To You.

Your best bet is to check your state's laws concerning pregnancy and disability.
I know that in California pregnancy is considered a disability and if teh doctor's put you on bed rest you can certainly apply for that and get a percentage of your pay.
Also look at your company's policies regarding disability and protected time off for your job.

Best of luck to you!

Definitely. If you have long or short term disability through your work place, you should be able to draw those benefits with a simple doctors note.

If you dont have that, you can look into SSI benefits for disability.

If you don't and something happens to the baby then you will be sorry. You might qualify for disability - you will have to check that out - I don't see why not but there again I am in Canada and we look after our people here.
