Tempted to buy some, but well pricey. Are they worth it, or are there similar, cheaper substitutes out there that you'd recomend?

Bose products are pure rubbish.

They cost about ten times what they are really worth. Only buy them if you are mug enough to believe the hype, but don't care about the flimsy build and poor sound quality.

If you want something decent, take a look at Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser, AKG or Grado. They will all show the Bose up for the poor performers they really are.

Depends what you want. Buying Bose is like buying a Ferrari - expensive, the best and totally impractical. I've got a pair of Maplin noise cancelling earphones. They hiss a bit, but they're great on aeroplanes.

(Any Americans reading this - airplanes and don't even ask me to start explaining about Maplin's)

ear-cancelling headphones...even the OMG Bose!!! sound a lil naff to me - i prefer using in-canal tpye ear-buds that fit inside your ear-canal rather than in the front part like a normal ear-bud. they are more comfortable, more discrete and sound much better and do as good a job as the noise cancelling ones...much better in some cases.

sennheiser do really amazing ones for the princely sum of £30 but i have seen them at silly prices online. if you want to splash some cash then check out etymotics - these are the best in the world and simply blow bose out of the water in every possible respect.

the difference between bose and ferrari is that ferraris are actually really good cars! the equivalent of a ferrari in hi-fi terms would be something like Krell but no-one likes hifi - it's for geeks!!! so i doubt you've heard of Krell, huh? vrooom, vroooooom...BEEP BEEP.
