I just spent my vacation in Sandpoint, because I used to live there and missed it so much. It's a great town ringed by mountains, right on Lake Pend Oreille, a huge lake so deep it was once used to test submarines. There's skiing up on Schweitzer mountain in the winter, the music festival in the summer (which just passed), a lot of interesting cultural events and indie movies at the Panida Theater (check out the Puking Chicken on the murals there -- the artist who painted the fancy peacocks on the interior walls apparently was unhappy with payment or some other aspect of his relationship with the theater, so he repainted one of the birds into a puking chicken). Sand Creek runs behind the main drag, and there's a kind of hidden main street for people in boats with restaurant decks, a bar, and access to the Starbucks. Right downtown there's a great park with a small beach. It's very much like a college town without the college (though I hear that is about to change). About 7000 people, though it's a lot like a town of 20,000 -- a lot of people from the surrounding mountains use it as their town. It's 1 hour north of Coeur d'Alene (also a beautiful city with a great lakefront park), 1 hour from Montana, 1 hour from Washington and 1 hour from Canada. It's an absolute gem of a town. Many wonderful restaurants, too -- The Point serves delicious burgers until 2 a.m., Joel's is the place for Mexican food, and Spuds offers a range of soups and sandwiches as well as full dinners that are always delicious -- they also have a deck over Sand Creek. Check out the Cedar Street Bridge, a big log structure spanning the creek (which is quite wide in the summer) which has a number or stores and a eating place or two.
If you happen to be heading down I-15 in the eastern part of the state, there's a terrific rest stop with interpretive info on lava deposits. I can't think of the name or exit number, but it's pretty well signed. It's a really amazing landscape, though it is blazing hot in the summer. The informational presentation is really great, and the paths have been redone fairly recently. It's a nice walk, and even if you're strolling, if you're reasonably healthy it won't take as long as the signs at the entrance say.
