I have purchased an engraved cake pan before, however I know that with the right equipment, I can do this myself. Any idea how I get started?

I wouldn't. You don't have a way to finish it afterwards so that the metal won't flake off into your food from now on.

Buy yourself a Dremel tool set.... they're relatively inexpensive and you can you them for lots of other things, then here are some directions:

Good luck! :)

Engrave Cake Pan Cover
What You Need

Cake Pan with metal or Plastic Sliding Lid
Sturdy Tape
1. Create a keepsake for a birthday, anniversary or other gathering by personalizing a cake pan lid for the occasion

2. Draw your message freehand, or use a computer and print it out at the size you choose. You can also add bits of simple artwork around the message.

3. Transfer the design to a metal pan lid by tracing over carbon paper. If working on a transparent plastic top, simply lay the pattern under the lid and secure with tape.

4. Use appropriate bits to etch along the design. On a plastic lid be sure to maintain a light touch so the accessory doesn't go through.
