What would you do if no one else is around except for your unit?

I would return fire, and produce his firearm. I would never, and I repeat never shoot someone out of revenge, when I did not know for sure that they were the culprit. Two wrongs don't make a right, and my men would lose all respect for me, if I acted dishonorably.

I would most likely kill them because in my mind I have probable cause. (and it is a reaction) The only reason I would possibly spare his life is that if he held his hands in the air and gave up. But the perception equals reality and individual behavior in the midst of the Iraqi people can have a strategic consequence. The last impression that we leave with them will be the one they most likely act upon. So even though there is nobody around, the public will find out and it could make matters worse.

In a combat situation he probably wouldn't have time to throw away his weapon. If he did, then it would be up to the commanding officer what to do with him. In a ideal situation soldiers are not suppose to kill for vengance. In the heat of the moment, I can see how it could happen though. It is too much to ask from anyone to put them in that situation. In that situation, if it happened in 3 seconds, I see a guy shooting at me and my unit, I spin and shoot him.

My first instinct would be to blow the combatants head off of his shoulders....but I cannot honestly say what I would do since I have never been in that situation. I would definitely wonder why he tossed his weapon and didn't shoot me as well.Maybe I only THINK no one is watching and it's a setup to make me as a US soldier look bad.

The answer you are looking for is "I make him prisoner of war" ... wrong! whether he dropped his gun or not nothing tells you that he doesn't have another gun hidden or that he doesn't carry a bomb on him ... so you shoot him down.
One less combatant to fight.
It is called rule of engagement, if you are under attack and your life is being threatened you have the right to respond with all the force necessary.

We aren't judge, jury and executioners .. He'd be taken to prison, where he'd be butt raped by bubba until his trial and probable execution.. but I would do no more than uphold the law. And you know why I would do this? Because I would be a better person.. someone who actually stood for something right.

Edit: I do agree that I wouldn't stop any ensuing a*s kicking he got on the way in.

In accordance to the rules of COMMON SENSE and CAMARADERIE:

I'd pop him once, just enough to get him down, then drag his rear back to where the rest of the unit is. Beat him up and unload our anger and frustrations on him with a combination of punches, kicks and karate chops. When we get tired, make him stand on his toes in the sun. When he tires, we resume the beating up and stick them MRE heaters up his behind, and when he begs us to kill him,... beat him up some more, until he's too sick to punch. When that happens,.. you tie a couple of ammo cases to his limbs filled with Sand and secretly drop him in the Tigris or Euphrates River.

In accordance to being POLITICALLY CORRECT:

Try to capture him alive. If successful, turn him in. If he fights back,... pop - pop - pop.

Curse the man who put me in the wrong country where both me and my buddy should never have been in the first place and maybe blow him away, but then again maybe just arrest his butt.

I'm not sure of the order in which I would do this.

Grease the bastard. He's a combatant, so he's toast. Simple rules of engagement---who knows if he's going to stab you when you arraign him?

take my butcher knife, drop him to the ground , pull his arm and chop it clean. ask him to put a pressure on his wound by using his own shirt, order him to carried my buddy dead body and bring him to my base, if he could survive that than he deserve to life (up to that moment, the rest up to my boss. killing him instantly only save him from his mysery, put us in trouble if someone see it. iraqi people need to be teach to fear and respect us, killing them just make them angry.
