Well, this is acutally a really compicated question. Every few years it seems they switch back and forth between an actual 1.6L and the 1.8.

To make a note I only pulled figures on 316i 's not 316 's.

For the E30:
1987-1993 316i - 1.6 L M40B16 I4, 102 hp (75 kW)

For the E36:
1991-1994 316i - 1.6 L M40B18 I4, 102 hp (76 kW) <--not sure about this one...should be a 1.8 based on the bore(B18)

1995-1999 316i - 1.6 L M43B16 I4, 102 hp (76 kW)

For the E46:
1998-2001 316i - 1.6 L, M43TUB16, 105 hp (77 kW)
2001-2005 316i - 1.8 L N42B18, 116 hp (87 kW)

For the E90/1/2/3:
2005- 316i - 1.6 L gasoline inline-four, 115 hp (85 kW)

So depending on what year 316i you have you may have a 1.6 or 1.8. And as others have said they are never exatly 1.6 or 1.8 they are rounded.

It depends on the age of the car.
The earliest 316s had 1.6-litre engines.
From March 1999 to January 2002 the 316i had a 1.9-litre engine.
From April 2002 to July 2005 the 316i had a 1.8-litre engine.

The current 316i is not marketed in the UK, but is marketed in countries such as Greece and Portugal where taxation on larger-engined cars is punative. It has a 1.6-litre engine again.

best idea is to look this up yourself. no offence but it would have been very quick for you to look it up then to post wait for a responce and hope the responce was correct.

www.kbb.com put in the cars year and make and it will tell you the motor and if any motor options in that year.

and by the way. to all the other posters out there. while bmw might sometimes work out that way it is a very comman misconception to that 316 means 3 with a 1.6 actually there are alot of times this is not the case. Ask a BMW tech they will look at you like your nuts. its just the model. not an indication of the size of motor.

00-01 323i for example does not have 2.3l
look at the late models of the 7's the number are really wacky with those cars...

bestbet look it up on KBB or Nada.

With the introduction of the 316i in 1988, I think, the 1.8 carburetted engine was replaced with a 1.6 injection lump.

Before that, it had been, in the 316, a 1.8 since something like 1979/80, a 1.6 before that.

Those making snide remarks and saying it's a 1.8 clearly haven't read your question and noticed the "i"!

Its the last 1.6 litre engine bmw made. It was last seen in the e36 (dolphin shape) bmw. Its a 4 clyinder. As opposed to the now taken over 1.8 litre engine used as a base bmw engine which is also a 6 cylinder. Usually to denote the diff.models use the badge. The 1st number is the model type. Eg.316, shows its a 3series, and the remaining 2 numbers are the cc. But not always the case!

This depends on the year. The earlier versions had a 1600 engine, well 1597cc. This was underpowered and so a non injection 1800 engine was fitted, though still badged as the 316. Later the 316 got the injected engine and the 318 got the 2000cc engine. Its a German thing!!

Clever question to provoke the obvious debate between those who know and those that thought they knew, but were misguided by the earlier models always being that way, and then bmw decided to confuse us!
So, 1.6 and 1.8 is the correct answer, but some will disagree.
They are just misinformed thats all.

BMW engines are the last 2 numbers

Love all those saying 1.6 and calling the asker stupid.
Engine size is 1796cc, called an 1800cc. Only really old 3 series has 1600cc engines.

Anybody knows that even a dim blonde like me
