Starting with the process of elimination, I would suggest reloading your sound drivers, and if this does not work, you could be having a problem with the motherboard.

1. Go to www.compaq.com
2. Under the heading "Select a task" Select "Software & Driver Downloads, and then put in the Model Number of your Compaq PC (The exact model number you have) There should be a label that give you this information..for example "Compaq Presario 5012US Desktop"
3. If you didn't put the the exact model number in, the next screen page will prompt you to once again pick the exact model number, otherwise see step 4.
4. Select the Operating System you have (Windows 2000, ME, XP. etc.)
5. The next Screen Page will list all of the available Drivers for your Desktop...look for the heading "Driver Audio"
6. The next screen page will say..."Do you need this update?" Read through to make sure that the information is applicable to your Desktop/Operating System...if so, download it following the instructions.
7. Once you have downloaded, and installed the Audio Drivers, you should be good to go. If this does not work, then you have an issue with your Motherboard. If so, you will need to purchase a PCI Sound Card to bypass the integrated sound card/chip on your motherboard.

Good Luck!!

Start by removing your hard drive, putting the rest on the curb, and go to the Apple store.

You wont EVER be asking tech questions like these, and if by some strange reason you DO have issues, you Apple store will FIX IT RIGHT THERE.
