Ok, that was rude. I personally have a friend who has been living with this disease for over 16 years, and they are fine! yes, money may get you a better physician, but all the meds are the same. Magic isn't getting anything that isn't available to anyone else. I've met him personally, and think he's a great guy. And, by the way, he has shared the name of the medication he takes daily, and most of my patients were on the same combo of meds, and are just as healthy as us "Normal" people.

HIV isn't the automatic death sentence that it once was when it was first discovered. Yes, it can kill you and yes, it can be dangerous, but there are lots of medications out on the market for HIV that can help people live virtually healthy lives. I don't know what the life expectancy is for someone on these medications for the virus, but I know people are living longer and longer now because of the medications. These meds can bring down the amount of HIV in the blood to the point where the virus is practically non-detectable by lab tests. I took a human sexuality class in college (this was 3 years ago) and we were discussing HIV and at that point in time, the instructor said that Magic Johnson had non-detectable levels of HIV in his blood. I don't know how he's doing now, but I'm guessing he's still doing fine since there really hasn't been anything in the news about him

If I was a basketball player, I don't think I would be scared to play in a game or tournament with him. He seems pretty intelligent about his HIV, so I don't think he would intentionally put anyone in danger of contracting the virus. If he got injured on the court, I think he would make sure to keep people away from him that weren't protected (not wearing gloves), so as to not spread the infection.

1. People die from AIDS, not HIV.

2. Magic Johnson is a professional athlete. He was extremely healthy before he got the virus and he's still in great shape. If he's taking his meds, I doubt that his HIV is going to turn into full blown AIDS any time soon.

3. If I was a professional basketball player, I doubt that I would be having sex with him, particularly during a basketball game. Nor would playing basketball result in direct intravenous blood transfer. I don't see any particular grounds for concern.

Yes, he is blessed to have the money to pay for great medical care. However, money/medicine isn't the only thing that attributes to how well you do after you contract HIV. Your lifestyle, your pre-HIV health, how well you take care of yourself physically/mentally after the diagnosis, your genetic make-up, and many other factors play into it. See website below for more info.

If I were a basketball player or anyone else I would not be afraid of him. I'm not afraid of anyone with this disease because it is very difficult to contract unless you have a risk factor. The main risk factors are sexual contact and/or sharing needles. The only risk factor I have is that I am in the health care profession. I am very careful with everyone I 'stick' because you never know who has the disease.

Best of luck.
