I am not a hardware specialist. Can I increase the size of my disk space (drive C) without erasing anything ? Do I have to add another drive or can I, and if so, do I have to erase everything? I am using Windows XP.

You would have to add another drive. You would not have to erase anything, as the two drives can work independently.

No, you cannot increase the size of your hard drive without replacing it. But you can add a second HD (called a slave drive) You will have to set the C:\drive as the master and the new drive as the slave with jumpers on the back of the drives. Some computers use “cable select,” in which the middle connector on the cable goes to the slave. Check your computer’s instructions.

Once the second hard drive is installed, the BIOS (Basic Input/Output system) will detect it. Set up the newly installed drive (This should be contained in the new drive’s instructions).

Not sure of yourself doing this? Ask a geek friend to assist you.

Although adding another drive would increase your disk space the other method of doing this would be to compress files which you don't use often. If you search for file compression you will find many programs for this. Just don't compress windows system files and you should be okay..

ur best and safest bet is to just buy a new hard frove and use it to expand your old one. but you will have to convert it to dynamic disk first. dont worry i wont easy any thing. to do this go to disk management to do this fallow these esay steps.

1. install the new hard drive in to your computer
2. boot and make sure it is shown in disk management. this show that you installed the disk right.
3. while in disk management format the disk.
4. convert the two disk to dynamic disk. do this by right clicking on the disk. it will convert them and it will not erase any thing. it will reboot.
5. go back to disk management and and right click on the c drive. and select expand volume.
6. fallow the directions and it will enlarge the size of your c drive with out havening to erase any thing.

to get to disk management go to control panel. then go to administrative tools then got to the computer management icon and then go down the storage sub heading and click on disk management.

You can simply buy and add a new hard drive. It is actually a very simple process and will usually take no more than an hour to install. Here is a tutorial to help you... http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/pcperipherals/0,39051168,61963966,00.htm ... and here is a site where you will probably find some of the best prices anywhere http://www.newegg.com .

It would be wise to buy an other drive and keep it to save data on it. you can compress the hard drive you have to give you more space but the price for that is making you computer slower, so buying an extra hard drive is better.

2 ways, get a larger HD and reinstall XP or put in a slave HD to use for storage, which is very simple to do.
