The average scroll saw in not worth bringing home. You will spend about $500 for a good one that is variable speed (required) and easy to change blades. The jigsaw is much cheaper, but can limit the amount of smaller work. When buying a jigsaw be sure to get variable speed and a blower is nice to rid your cutting area from depris while in use. These will only set you back $40-60. Don't spend less and get far less than you will be happy with at the end of the day.

Scroll saw is easier to use but more money than a jig saw, and it has a throat that limits the size of the project.

go with the jigsaw, while ur there, buy a coping saw, its a small cheap hand saw, that is better for things too small, but with practice and the right blades, a jug-saw can do it all, personally, if the cutouts are large, you could invest in a saws-all(not sure of that spelling..) they're much better for large items, but a bit pricier, though if its one time use, they have cheapies out there that are affordable, they just dont last long

2 ways to approach this. If your cut outs are going to be large a jig saw is the choice. If you are going to do smaller, intricate work a table scroll saw. Both would be an asset.

Most stand-ups I have seen are too big for a scroll saw. You can get finer cut blades for a jig-saw.

Yea, im not a big wood worker, but it all depends on what you will be building, and how sharp the cuts are. if you plan on making sharp cuts then i would go with a scroll saw, they tend to be easier to control, and fairly easy to use.

In my opinion, a jig saw is much more useful, all around. They can take a variety of blades, are easy to control. I like mine a lot!

For stand-ups I would recommend a jig saw. They are a whole lot cheaper and better for big projects.`
