Go check out toms hardware charts to see how the various cards you're looking at rate against eachother. It looks like the ATI X1660Pro beats out the GeForce, but you should still look at the chart and see how those cards stack up against other ones.

One thing I can tell you is that the nVidia one will work way better with linux if you ever plan on switching. If you're only ever going to use windows, brand doesn't really matter.

Of those two, the Radeon X1650 Pro but...

Neither of those cards is satisfactory for gaming- both are slower than current entry-level gaming cards. You can get much better PCI-E cards for USD $120 or less.

Of the 8000 series, the minimum card to consider is the 8600GT- the ones below it (8500,8400) are slow DDR2 cards and having DX10 support doesn't make up for that. The GeForce 7600GT costs about $80 and smokes them both.

On the Radeon side, ATI makes great midrange and high-end cards, but their lower-end cards are WAY overpriced. If you're spending $150 or more, then cards like the X1950Pro and X1950XT are excellent options. But if you're spending under $100, ATI just isn't competitive on price.

Go for Geforce 8500GT.
I have used both Radeon and Nvidia cards, and in the end, its clear to me that Nvidia is best.

radeon.

8500gt = 256 vram clocked at around 500/550
plus it runs really hot with stock heatsink and fan, which means no overclocking capabilities at all.
serious lame.
