The simple fact is that we find people who are physically like us more attractive. If brothers and sisters are seperated from birth, when they meet as adults they find each other very attractive (when children grow up together they are less likely to find each other attractive when they become adults).

This increases genetically stability.

But at the same time we find the exotic very attractive. The dark skinned girl or the blonde haired boy (depending on your own physical make up).

We also find the stranger, the person passing through attractive. Want to get laid, tell girls or boys you meet that you are leaving the country next week. See what happens.

This increases genetic diversity.

Opposites can be attractive to each because of the novelty of the differences. Relationships founded on differences have little chance for success though. To be compatible with another person does not include being clones of each other. It is important, however, that when choosing a mate, the two of you share significant common ideology.

because the other person has what you need. has what you don't have. understands what you don't understand. you're trying to complete/expand yourself.
