It's not just a matter of knowing who the top publishers are. You also have to decide what kinds of books you want to work on--if fiction, what genre; if non-fiction, what subjects; if religious, what religion/theology, etc. Commercial books, literary books, academic books, text books, electronic books?

All of these factors should influence where you look for jobs.

If you want to edit literary fiction, for example, you might be better off looking at some of the smaller publishers, who tend to specialize in that kind of book. Larger publishers tend to be more commercial and concerned with the bottom line.

Another way to decide where you might like to work is to look at your bookshelves. What publishers' names show up there the most often?

If you're still in school, you should look for an internship with a publisher. It's a very competitive industry for entry-level jobs, and everyone else applying for the jobs you'll be applying for will have had some kind of internship or other training.
