Your question is in economics so I am going to give you an economics answer.
Firstly, economics is the measure of the wealth of a country or place. Conventional economics ignores things that don't generate a $ value. In countries where farmers eat what they grow and sell very little, all their effort is unmeasured.
Economics is trying to look at the value of things that are not turned into money.
Hobbies are one of these areas.
Hobbies are a source of spending. Pure consumption.
Exceptions are things such as gardening, where we can eat what we grow. Or if we make our own clothes, we avoid purchasing clothes.
Hobbies though might turn later into a business, but in some poorer countries people don't spend their spare time on hobbies, they use that time making more money.
The main value is social and personal. People with hobbies tend to be happier and use their hobbies to build social networks (online game players often meet boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses online)
It is a difficult one to answer from an economic point of view.

.I suppose a hobby is something that we love to do, otherwise we would not do it, as it's an unpaid pastime. It's nice to come home after having your nose to the grindstone all day, and set about your model planes, or wiring up your bonsai tree or whatever it is that takes you. You get immense pleasure, and when they come along and tell you that you are to old and being retired at the end of the month, your boss will wonder at the strange light in your eye, and the smile on your face. He wont know that he's doing you a favour, all that extra time for your hobby, until the end of your day's.

Generally, a hobby is something you enjoy, like woodworking or knitting. A hobby can lead to income. I heard of a 12 year old kid who became a millionaire buying & selling sports cards. My sister works with stained glass, & it became a business for her. Find something you like & try it.

It's like smoking, hobbies are a stress reducer. You get so caught up in your hobby, you don't worry about problems you don't need to worry about.
