Radon is a chemical element that is formed during the radiactive decay of radium. Radon is itself radioactive and eventually breaks down into polonium and helium. Radon occurs naturally in soil and water, and can accumulate in buildings. Thus, it is important to test for radon in your home, especially if your area is known to have a significant natural occurrence. Exposure to radon causes over 20,000 deaths from lung cancer in the United States every year.

Radon is a noble radioactive gas. Noble means it has a very low chemical reactivity and radioactive means radon breaks down into elements of lower atomic numbers with the emission of alpha, beta or gamma rays.
It is one of the products in the radioactive disintegration of Uranium and other heavy elements.

In addition to the above info, radon gas is fairly common in soil, although it's in very small quantities. It often seeps through cracks in basement floors and can cause illness if not stopped. You can buy radon detectors in building supply and hardware stores and departments to see if the level in your dwelling is at a dangerous level.
