I am flying into Denver, CO then driving to Aspen, CO.
Are the highways and roads open during December?
Does it snow a lot during the month of December?

It's about a 3.5 hour drive from the Denver Airport to Aspen in dry conditions in the winter. So, you should try and fly to Aspen for the sake of time unless it's a lot more expensive.

If you choose to do the drive: In the winter, Colorado is usually nice and sunny unless there is a storm. It's usually sunny about 5 days in a row and then a low pressure front will move in and it will storm for 2 days in a row.

I estimate there is an 80% chance it will completely dry on your drive and you will be fine. However, there is a 20% chance you may run into snow. Even if you do encounter snow, you will be on I-70, a very well maintained interstate, most of the way. They do a great job of plowing I-70 and Highway 82 (which you will take the last 45 miles from Glenwood Springs to Aspen).

However, just before new years last year there was a huge blizzard and my buddies and I were trying to drive from Denver to Aspen. However, they closed down I-70 just west of Denver for 12 hours because of ice and we had to turn back and spend the night in Denver. There was about 24 inches of snow from that storm! However, it was a very rare occurence (they close I-70 once a month at the most) and not likely to happen to you.

You should be fine driving, but I thought I would share my story and give you the heads up. Have a great trip, Aspen is a blast.

Denver To Aspen

yes the highways are open in December. There are very few mountain roads in Colorado that permanently close in the winter. Basically only ones on the very high mountain passes that don't connect a populated area to a ski resort close. Example - trail ridge road in Rocky Mountain NP.

You go west on I70 out of Denver - it's a 8 lane highway most of the way. You go through the tunnel under Loveland pass. Couldn't be an easier drive.

Problem is that Denver to Aspen is like a 3+ hour drive in good weather. If it's snowing, and you aren't used to driving in a snow storm it could be a long journey. The locals will still be going 80Mph even in a blizzard.

You can take I-70 all the way, they do close Independence Pass in the wintertime, which is a shame because it's very scenic and allows you to get off of 70 for a while.
