I thought remaking Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho were the biggest mistakes Hollywood made...until I saw the trailer for Halloween....this looks AWFUL!

I have to agree with you. Very few have an original idea in La La Land. And if they do, well, producers/studios are afraid to risk it. An earlier answer said it was money, pure and simple. And I agree that is a big part of it. However, Hollywood has been playing the remake game for a long time. Even Hitchcock remade at least one of his earlier films. (The Man Who Knew Too Much) Very few remakes surpass the originals, much less equal them. But there are a few:
A Star is Born - remade three times, the second version with Judy Garland is the best.
Father of the Bride and Father's Little Dividend - the originals starred Elizabeth Taylor as the Bride and Spencer Tracy as the Father of the bride. The remakes were well done and brought this story up-to-date without loosing the flavor.
Little Women - I don't know the number of times this has been made and remade. There are a lot of good versions of this, but I have two personal faves. The June Allyson version and the Wynona Rider version.
Most of the horror movie remakes don't cut it because they either don't leave enough to the imagination (Thirteen Ghosts), they overwhelm the audience with special effects (The Haunting), or the directors film scene for scene the exact same as the original (Pyscho). The only remake of a horror movie I have seen that surpassed the original, was The Shining. Now, nobody does crazy like Jack, but the movie was a disappointment to those of us that read the book. Even Stephen King was disappointed. When he was given the opportunity to remake this as a miniseries, he was able to do it right and remain fairly true to the book.
Anyway, just look on this answer site at the number of people who want to make a movie, but can't come up with an idea. There are loads of questions on here from people who want someone else to come up with an idea/plot/story for a movie. One of them may be a producer or director or writer looking for the next original idea.

The Dawn of the Dead remake was fantastic! I like it much better than the original. Same goes for the Lindsay Lohan / Jamie Lee Curtis remake of Freaky Friday. Others that are okay (but not better than the originals) are The Fog, When a Stranger Calls, and The Hills Have Eyes.

The horror remakes I've enjoyed:
NOSFERATU (1979)
CAT PEOPLE (1982)
THE THING (1982)
THE FLY (1986)
THE BLOB (1988)
DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004)
HOUSE OF WAX (2005) - although that was a remake in name only
THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006)
THE OMEN (2006)
Remakes I would have happily lived without seeing:
PSYCHO (1998)
THE HAUNTING (1999)
HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1999)
CARRIE (2002)
THIRTEEN GHOSTS (2001)
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003)
THE GRUDGE (2004)
THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (2005)
THE FOG (2005)
BLACK CHRISTMAS (2006)
WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (2006)
THE WICKER MAN (2006) - not that the original was any great shakes either

All the reboots / remakes are getting a bit irritating. Probably the worst one I've seen is The Wicker Man which pales in comparison to the original.
The only good one I've seen lately was Batman Begins which is a great reboot for the franchise.

I liked the King Kong remake (not sure Jack Black was right for that role, but still did a good job). I really liked the special effects.
I also agree with you in that it's a rare day when they come up with an original movie or one that is really gripping. Not to say there arent good movies but not many that I can really say were spectacular.

It's easy money for a movie studio in such an unfriendly and unpredictable industry. The cost of movies is sky rocketing, sadly, because of DVD and rising costs movie theatre attendance is dropping. It's becoming harder and harder to break even much less make money. So they stick to sequels and remaking old stuff because people will immediately identify with it and spend money on it. It's not about imagination...it's about money, plain and simple.
