If you read the book -- which is INCREDIBLY long! -- it explains it a little better. Fantine (pronounced fon - teen) is one of a group of girls who goes out with a group of University students (back when University students were almost above the law). The guys decide to take them out, give them the time of their lives, and then leave and never call, write, nothing. They just disappear. And after trying for a time to find them, Fantine discovers that she is pregnant. In order to provide for Cosette, she begins by working in a factory, but she also sells her hair to wigmakers, her teeth to dental students and evetually turns to prostitution. I think "consumption" was an old-fashioned name for cancer, but it could have been a worsening case of untreated syphyllis when she finally succumbs (It's been a while since I've read the book) -- but only after telling Valjean about Cosette and charging him to take care of her. He does becasue he feels partially responsible since she was discharged from HIS factory.

Actually "consumption" was Tuberculosis. So she died of TB, which she got while being a prostitute.
