First stop Luxor Temple which you will probably be able to walk to if you are staying in Luxor.
Secondly Karnak Temple just down the road is a must, it is truly amazing, may have to get a taxi but they are very reasonably priced just make sure you agree a price before you get in.
You will see many horse and carts around, you must do this as it takes you too some of the poorer parts of Luxor where you will get a true feel for Egypt. They last around an hour and are fairly priced, but again agree a price beforehand.

If you don't mind travelling further afield the most outstanding thing in this area is Abu Simbel, you will have to spend a whole day on this as it takes 2 hours to get there but you will be driving through the desert which is a great experience. Also you will probably have to go as a group but it is worth it, something I will never forget.

Hope this helps. Have a great time.

On the east side of the Nile you can visit the karnak temple, the Luxor temple and the Luxor museum. At night you can do the sound and light show of the Karnak temple. Each day it is done in a different language, so ask when it is done in English. On the west side of the Nile you can visit the Deir el bahari temple, the valley of the kings, of the Queens, of the nobles. The tomb of Tut Ankh Amun which is in the valley of the Kings but has a special importance.

Everyone's forgetting Hatshepsut! Lol! Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, and you can't forget Hatshepsut!
If you like shopping, there's a huge market where you can really deal down and get some great things for a low price if you know how to haggle.

Good luck, happy travels and have soo much fun!

I went to luxor a couple of years ago. You are lucky to be staying so close to Luxor temple. It is amazing and should definitly be on your list.

Also, there is a two story mcdonalds near to the temple. I strongly advise you to go upstairs in there at around sunset and look out over the river. Even if you don't eat anything, it is a brilliant view.

you must see luxor temple and karnak temple. the sacred lake is amazing at karnak. luxor museum is a must too. try and see the sound and light show at karnak too. these can be done in 1 day as we did them in 1 day last year. also valley of the kings and queens especially tutankhamun's tomb, hatshepsut's temple and colossi of menmon. these can be done in a day too. from luxor you could go by road or air to see abu simbel. worth the journey too in my opinion. or there are medinet habu and dendera. i didn't see these and i'm hoping i will as i'm planning a return visit. just relax and enjoy. this is sensory overload!!

you have to go and see the valley of the artisans. It's amazing, they are tiny tombs that you climb down into. The art work on the walls is the best presevered out of al of the tombs you can go into as they were fairly untouched by theives. We booked a tour with our hotel and it was just us and a guide. I'm npot keen on tours either but it was definitely worth it as you get to find out a lot more about each place. Without the tourguides it's very hard to get a real understanding of everything. There are no signs telling you or explaining what you are looking at. Have fun, its amazing
