With proper soil, almost anything will grow in a pot.. I have impatiens, geraniums, zinnia, petunias, begonia, lavender, etc. etc. etc. all growing nicely in pots.
The key is to use good soil and to allow drainage in the pot. Get QUALITY potting soil and some osmocote fertilizer. Large containers are easier to manage than small ones (they hold moisture longer). Plant, fertilize, water, enjoy. Simple as that.
Of course, be sure you select plants that like the conditions that you want them to grow in. Select shade lovers for shade and sun lovers for sun.. Everyone should be very happy then.

Very gently. Put a layer of pebbles in the bottom of the pot, then put the dirt in. Try to remove one of the plants as gently as you can from the first pot. Ease the dirt around the roots, tamp down gently and water, but not over-generously. Replace the dirt in the first pot as needed. The sooner you do this, the less time the roots from the separate plants will become entangled.

I like to prepare early by planting tulip bulbs in pots and having them indoors until spring.
I also have found that seed packets containing the words " MIX" offer an in expensive way to get a colorful variety.
Are you looking for annuals or perennials? I would search online or in nurseries for attractive plants, then find out when they bloom.

You could still use bedding plants until the first frost which by the way the weather is going could be quite some time.

As Julie says regarding the soil, but almost anything can be grown in pots. I have usual annuals and beddings, but also grow perennials - hostas, clematis, stipa grasses, heucharas, eucalyptis and even a ginko biloba tree!

You'll still get some colour out of geraniums.
There will be pansies in the shops soon, too and varieties of heliotropes, produce flowers through the winter. The bulbs for the spring.
Also use grasses and foliage to plump it all out and give light and shade.
