My parents were democrats, but they leaned to the conservative side. I am a democrat, but I lean to the liberal side. I am probably what most people would call a moderate liberal.

Most people grow more conservative as they get older. The heady idealism of youth just naturally fades away into the realism of adulthood. Both groups could probably stand to learn a little from the other.

My parents were conservative Democrats up until Reagan and then became Republicans (still are to this day). I am also a Republican (as is my brother). Politics, and the discussion of it was always a big part of my life as a child.

I do have a sister (who is much much younger than I), who is very liberal politically (and in her lifestyle). She is a vocal atheist as well. She is very young so that will probably change somewhat over time, but she grew up under the same parents with the same political leanings and a similar amount of discussion (also a very Christian household).

Both my parents are Democrats. They never discussed it with me. When I was old enough to vote, I had looked at the options, what the parties stood for and made up my own mind. I ended up agreeing with them but they had nothing to do with it. Of course back then the hot button issues were not there. While I agree with more of the Republican concepts than the Democrat side, the things that affect my life most go the other way.

I think it happens often. The people who raise you have a strong influence on your beliefs and values. My father never allowed a bumper sticker or lawn sign on any of our cars or houses and never discussed who he supported or was against when we (brother, sister and I) were children, and my sister voted Democrat when she was young, but I think we all vote Republican now.
