Experiment! Go to the Goodwill or thrift store and find some interesting clothes and make handbags for much cheaper. Old out of date jeans make great bags (look on the internet, lots of different ideas), shrink wool sweaters for a fabulous sturdy wool cloth, use funky old shirts as fabric to line the bags, find old (probably fake) fur coats to make trendy animal bags, and even look for vintage tapestry curtains for a more elegant look.
Let your imagination run wild, and find your style! And do it on a budget. You will have a blast!

Upholstery and tapestry are the most interesting, and often the cheapest because you can buy remnants and closeouts. Look for an outlet store.
Many handbags can be stabilized with thick -sew-in interfacing or good sturdy lining.

My Mom used to make handbags as a side income. She always used denim, canvas, or heavier type fabrics that would stand up to abuse!
Best wishes with your new endeavor!

I would say courdoroy and denim. You can make some cute handbags out of these materials and they're durable and machine washable.
Good luck.

I would say, like others, denim and I asked my sister who sews and she suggested using wool.
Sidenote: (Not related to sewing) Wool is good for fire resistant material because it does not support a flame and will not catch on fire.
