There are 3 1864 Indian Head cents, one is made of copper-nickel and has a pale color and is thicker than the bronze ones. There are 2 bronze ones, one has the letter L on the lower ribbon behind the neck. It stands for James B. Longacre the designer. The one with the L is the rarest and has a value of $37 in the low grade of good to $205 in grade extra fine. The other bronze one values are $5 to $45 in the same grade span. The copper-nickel one $11 to $70. There are grades in between and each has its own value. A dealer needs to see it to grade it. It is a Civil War coin so has history value. The above values are about what a dealer would pay.

Your best bet would be to take your coins to a local coin dealer. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coin. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

Try posting pictures on this website (there are many coin experts here that can help you evaluate it):

Good Luck!

Last time I was at a coin store (at least six or seven years ago), they sold Indian Heads for anywhere from three cents to a dime. I was surprised it wasn't more.

It's probably worth more than that to just *have*, you know?

You can look in the Red Book (2007 U.S. Coin Digest).
