The cheese helps. But the crust is important. Some are just plain nasty. Some are just sponges for grease. But some are just really really good. The sauce can be a key part as well. For instance, I used to love East of Chicago pizza. But recently, at least at the location I'm familiar with, they've done something to their sauce where it has an almost sour flavor to it. Sour as in spoiled. The combination of toppings also helps or hurts the pizza.

I believe there are three items that make the best pizza. Crust, flavor and type. Sauce, flavor, light or heavy amount, homemade or canned. Cheese, one kind or different blends. No matter what you choose always get the best quality you can in ingredients, when you make your own. Also use Olive oil. As to toppings when you make your own you can really get creative.

As with any dish, I think it's the whole package. For me, it's a combination of soft, pillowy crust, a light application of tomato sauce (enough to flavor, not overwhelm), and cheese that's thick and perfectly melted, never oily. If any one of those is off, it can ruin the whole pizza.
The worst for me, though, is the sauce (I can't stand tomatoes). I usually eat white pizza because most places use way too much tomato sauce.

Good quality, homemade dough that is thin and crisp outside, chewy inside. Homemade buffala mozzarella. Fresh tomatoes, thinly sliced, and fresh, homemade marinara that's been simmered with plenty of garlic and herbs. And fresh basil leaves placed on top just before serving. I'm something of a purist when it comes to pizza!

My house! But, it's all in the crust, and a good old brick oven to bake the pizza in!

The thickness of the crust. I'm orginally from Jersey so I am all about a thin crust pizza.
