Do you think he would have won the election over Kennedy in 1960? He narrowly lost due to the first televised debates and the mafia help to Kennedy.

Nixon lost the election because he treated the televised debate with Kennedy as if he (Nixon) were the heir apparent to Eisenhower. He was sure he could win because of his success in the "Checker" speech in 1954 where he defended himself by pleading an "aw shucks, I was just in the wrong time and place, and I don't take money because my wife has a cloth, not mink, coat"

He was actually a terrible public speaker. He spoke stiffly and abruptly. He looked like a smarmy thug on television, and he came off as both arrogant and inept.

The polls, which projected a landslide for Nixon, changed after the election. It had less to do with Nixon's looks than his demeanor, but Kennedy's attractiveness did not hurt.

As for the mafia, Sam Giancana (the mafia don of Chicago) admitted he received money from Joe Kennedy (with whom he had imported liquor during the depression) to deliver the union vote to Kennedy. Whether that was true or not is known only to Kennedy and Giancana, but many people believe that
it is.

Nixon was an insecure man who used the same election "techniques" the Kennedys did (or there never would have been a Watergate break-in).

Very likely. Unfortunately so many people voted for the young Senator Kennedy because of his looks. Nixon had experience and was better known. I remember some of my mother's lady friends talking about how handsome Kennedy was and they wanted him in the White House. Ridiculous reason to vote for someone but apparently not to them. Good thing, it worked out and Kennedy won.

Since the advent of TV, it's surprising how often: "Who won?
Is the same as: "Who's better looking?"

I know 'Longhair' was trying to say looks aren't the issue, but …..
Kennedy = Best, Nixon = Worst; works ONLY as a beauty contest.
If you objectively compare accomplishments, Kennedy makes neither best nor worst list, while Nixon arguably makes both.

Applying the 'Brad Wins' rule to this election.
Romney vrs Clinton-------->Romney
Romney vrs Obama-------->Too close to call
Giuliani vrs Obama---------->Obama
Giuliani vrs Clinton----------->Too close to call

Past TV Elections:
Who's better looking?
Bush or Kerry?------------->Bush
Bush or Gore?-------------> About the same (close election)
Clinton or Dole?----------->Clinton
Clinton or Bush Sr---------> Clinton
Bush Sr or Dukakis-------->Bush Sr
Regan or Mondale-------->Regan
Regan or Carter----------->Regan
Carter or Ford------------->Carter
Nixon or McGovern?------>Nixon
Nixon or Humphrey?------->Nixon
Johnson or Goldwater?---->Goldwater *
Kennedy or Nixon?-------->Kennedy

*Of course this was the election following the "Kennedy Martyrdom"
If the beauty contest is between Goldwater and Kennedy, Goldwater loses.

This is just an FYI for you. Did you know the fact that Richard Millhouse Nixon was the ONLY president that there is no proof that he ever cheated on his wife ? Undisputed proof on every single one of the others, but not him. Perhaps if he did look like Brad Pit, he would have had a chance.

But then who would "do it" with a Bozo like that? Poor Pat, I often wonder what or who she was thinking about when the lights were out.

It would have helped. Kennedy's suave handling of the televised debates helped his campaign immensely.

Yes, in fact if Joe Kennedy hadn't had made a deal with the Unions, Kennedy would have lost. But then again, if the Kennedy's had kept their promises to the Unions, Kennedy would still be around today.

If Nixon had shaved and put make up on he would have won that election

No. Nixon was the second-worst President we ever had, and JFK was one of the best. The Mafia had nothing to do with it - that is typical Republican whining.
