Your body repairs itself during sleep. So if you aren't sleeping, your immune system is severely disturbed...thus making you susceptible to a wide variety of illnesses. You even AGE faster when you are chronically sleep-deprived.

Take it from an insomniac after a few days of not sleeping your body starts to shut down. The longest that I have gone without sleeping is 3 days. The first 24 hours no big deal. The next 24 hours I find my self smoking more cigarettes muscles start to cramp and a headache starts. By the third day all of the above but now your lungs hurt because of all the smoking your head is killing you you start to slur words and use wrong words when trying to form sentences. You lose track of what you were saying or doing you can't get comfortable. Eventually you will fall asleep even if you are fighting it. It is your bodies coping mechanism. I have to now take prescription medication so that I will sleep at least 5 to 6 hours a day. Since I have been taking the medication and actually sleeping I have lost weight, slowed way down on the smoking, better thought process more energy and a better mood.
