There is. It's called a "D Notice". It's rarely used and when it is the story has a security angle.
The Police can also ask that newspapers withhold stories. If there had been a kidnapping, for example, the criminals might have told the relatives of the victim not to contact the police. If the news of the kidnapping appeared in the press then the criminals would know that the police were on their trail.

Nope! Freedom of the Press - there are a number of options that can be taken after a story is published (i.e if you are rich then sue the crap out of them), but aside from that, much of the weight is based on repute, and the few guidelines that do exist.

I don't agree that there should be any kind of censorship on items that affects the country & our protection. I do feel that news stories that could interfer with the views of the public should be censored until there is 100% fact to back the theory/conspiracy.

They may not directly control what goes into the paper but they do minitor it. Look up Clarence Mitchell - PR for the McCanns. Take a look at his job!!

Big Brother is here!

That would be censorship, not having something like the system you propose is a privilege people fought for for a long time.

i have a problem with newspapers, if the story has political overtones, and involves people who may not get their proper
say, if their say happens to rock the boat too much
