I would think most criminals are desperate and would move quickly.

If you suspect someone has gotten your number, call your card provider and ask them to give you a new number and mail you a new card and cancel the old number.

They will assume that you know something is wrong and will report it as soon as you realize it. Therefore they will act quickly and drain your card as soon as possible before you cancel it. Trying to use a stolen credit card can get them caught and they know it so they use it right away for a few days and get rid of it. If they wait weeks or months it could be unusable and a waste of time and effort.

Contact your credit card company about setting up one-time-use numbers. They will be happy to fill you in on it
