My friend is being picked on by the employer, who is now digging deep into her personnel file to try to find a reason to fire her. She has been there for over 20 years and has never been disciplined.

If she ever put any false or misleading information on a job related record/document, her resume or employment application they could use that as a reason to fire her regardless of when that happened.

I sympathize with your friend, but unfortunatly, the employer has many avenues to choose from when firing an employee.

He can base it on shortage of work, based on his opinion of where he wants the company to head.

The real question is, does your friend really want to work in an environment where the employer would contantly give her a hard time? Perhaps she should concentrate on making good whatever bad things happened between them.

Kissing *** and apologizing (even if you feel it isn;t right) will get your friend much further ahead with her boss than fighting him dead on.

Remember, the boss is the customer, and we the workers are mere contracters getting paid to do exactly what he wants. Would you want a guy painting your house demanding he can't be fired? Unfortunately, your friend is that painter, and the boss is you inside your house.

An employer can fire an employee for no reason. If an employee is fired for cause, the employer can try to get out of paying unemployment compensation.

i think it's illegal. the u.s. tax boys will only re-imberse 3 years back - so if thats the most retro they will go it should apply here as well. there usually is a restriction on this - you can't sue or claim for old old things. if it was so bad how come he didn't do it then ?
i'd file a complaint with the police and speak to a lawyer - sue the turkey if necessary and maybe it's time to move on to a new job. change place and luck...as the saying goes.
