Good question, as might be the subject of some women and shoes. Tools and shoes aren't strictly gender specific however, as it relates to what/how much one can own.
I believe that "tools" for men are like testosterone injections, and are associated with ego, in owning or using. That said; they also have purpose beyond just filling ones tool belt or work shop.
Obviously for someone not interested in "using"; just owning; there might be some OCD or other issues involved?
On the other side there are collectors of antique tools.
I often have bought,,,in the past,,, a tool I needed very specifically, but knew I might never use again. Hmmm what does that say?
I happen to be in a business where tools are neccesary; both hand and power. I own a half dozen hammers, or more, but anyone who USES tools, especially for any length of time; develops a fondness for a particular one, while the others might hang on the tool wall; largely ignored.

Heard of "Tim The Tool Man Taylor?" (TV show)
He would be a classic example of excess in the tool category. I have purchased tools that simply take up space. I own them because I might use them. Fleeting regret over my moment of weakness after realizing I may not actually use the tool. But, oh well "be prepared" is the Boy Scout moto. I love tools but only I can buy them for myself. I have a taste for the exotic and technologically advanced mechanisms. Several models may be necessary for a complete arsenal.
Working in the construction industry as I do, tools are part of my identity and help support my family. Sweety Pie needs more shoes in the closet or purses taking up space in totes and other nooks and cranny's......say thank you to Dad & his tools!

A good example would be a router. It is a real pain to take it off the table and set it up for freehand use, then put it back. I have one permanently mounted, and a plunge router for freehand use. Than for production trim work or profiles I have a shaper. It just doesn't get any better than that does it?
Then again I use them to make cabinets, tables, etc.. just because I like to do that sort of thing. The wife was a little upset when I started showing up with table saws and drill presses but she got over it when I started making things for her.
I also believe that the more tools a guy has the less likely he is to be out in bars or driving around getting DUI's. It is sort of a coming of age ritual between the party animal and man stages.

I'm a 48 year old builder, and have been doing this line of work since I was old enough to walk. I have built a lot of homes and commercial buildings. Basically all I do now is finish work. After working hard for 8-12 hours a day, I come home to my hobby. Cabinet making. To answer your question, no, men can not have enough tools.

If anyone has too many tools its me. But I absolutely love tools and can't stop buying them. Just bought a pillar drill. Always ask for tools at Xmas and birthday. Trouble is they are so cheap compared with twenty years ago.
Oh, and I really want an air compressor.

You have too many when you have no where to store them all or you look at a tool and can't remember the last time you used it, or if you have ever used it, or if it is even yours.

No, its essential to have so many tools that you have no space in which to work.
That way you've also got a case for another workshop..which of course you need to fill to bursting with as many tools as possible so you get workshop number 3.
Alwasy choose the model that is at least one higher in the range than you absolutely need...more power means more noise, mess and satisfaction.
best of luck with your collection.
I have a particularly fine collection of chainsaws. no idea way, i've only got one pair of hands.

not if you know what you are doing with them. Having the right tool for the job and the knowlege to get the best product out of it is the name of the game.
