How to set up a wireless router to a ethernet wall socket?

Ok. i moved into an apartment that offers free internet. there is no modem just a wall socket to connect an ethernet cable, thats what i'm on now. but i want to connect a wireless linksys router to it so i can go wireless on my laptop. i assume this connection is coming from a network as it is, so one concern that i have is, will my ip address change all the time and will it affect my wireless conection? and also how do i go about setting up my router?

Well this can get a little into networking but that is not a major issue. Simply connect your computer to the outlet first, see what IP is being issued. (Click start --->Run--->type cmd in the run line type ipconfig /all) write down the IP and gateway.

Plug your computer into the router and log on to it locally. Set it to obtain the IP automatically from the WAN/Internet. Then setup the DHCP (local settings) to use SOME OTHER IP RANGE than that issued to your computer when you connected directly.

IE if your computer shows something like.
IP 192.168.0.xx and the gateway is 192.168.0.1 or
IP 10.0.0.xx and gateway is 10.0.0.1
then set your routers DHCP range to say 192.168.1.xx just do not use the same IP ranges within both!

Once you have setup a diferent range of IP's for YOUR network just connect the cable from the etihernet port for your apartment to the WAN/Internet port of your router and you should be good to go.

This will give you another network within your apartment and will isolate your machines from the apartments network. You really don't care if the IP changes on the apartments system as long as it connects to the internet you will connect.
