Ask each of these questions:

Will this be primarily for fun, or to become an accomplished musician? (fun=guitar, musician = piano)

Do I have a lot of time to spend practicing, or just a little bit? (a lot = piano, a little = guitar)

Do I want to be able to extremely portable, or does that not matter much since a lot of places do have a piano? (portable = guitar, doesn't matter = piano)

Do I want to spend time understanding music and how it works, or do I just want to enjoy playing a couple songs? (understand = piano, just play = guitar)

Do I want to play classical music? (yes = piano)
Do I want to play rock music? (yes = guitar, but really either!)

Do I want to do music as a job for a living eventually? (Yes = both, but piano first).

Depends on what you're after. If you wanna be a better all-around musician, learn the piano first (learning how to read music is a HUGE plus. If you wanna rock out right now- learn the guitar. There are alot of websites that tab (show you where and w/ what finger to play certain notes and chords) that you could easily learn just about every song. Or, you could go crazy and learn both (classically) at the same time. Learning chords and scales will, in my humble opinion, enhance your skills with both instruments.

Go for the Guitar. It is fun!!
But if you are serious about music and want to make some sort of career out of it, learn the Piano.

Still if you are not sure, start with the guitar, learn for a year and then take up the piano.

Piano-You can play close to all tool you understand. But piano is more difficult to journey with. Guitar-ladies will most commonly like this. But you have got to song it close to each and every week or extra. Its fairly your desition. Me i've guitar now, i cant song my guitar even proposal i've tuner. and the strings pops. I proposal that piano is convenient. Caz you simply plug it in and play. I would check out piano and promote my guitar. Or no longer. lol. so there are a few stuff or clues lol. well success!

I've been paying both for 3 years :)

Piano has such a unique sound and I love playing current day popular songs.... but guitar is just so darn fun. Do whatever you like.. lol I can't really help you decide. I kind of like guitar better though because you can bring it around as the other answer showed. When I went camping with my neighbors, theres another kid that plays guitar and we brought them along. GREAT entertainment.. its not like you can carry around a piano. =D

First off, How much time do you have?
If you have lots of free time, I would have to say piano first.
Learning a keyboard instrument takes you into a lot of different directions. Organ, synthesizer just to name a couple.
Then pick up guitar just for fun.
In my youth I was an instrument junkie. I learned to play as many as I could. How ever I have always come back to the keyboard.

I love piano, but I think you should learn guitar. Piano is a fabulous instrument, but the problem is it's so BIG that you cant take it around with you. You can bring a guitar anywhere, so it's more practical, I think.

(picture yourself trying to bring your piano to play around the bonfire!)
