Personal happiness is a very weak foundation for anything and happiness is different for different people. Unfortunately, this is what most people base their ethics upon.

Obligation implies an external force. "I feel obligated" is a nonsense phrase. Obligation is not a matter of feelings of sympathy or empathy. Obligation is only a factor for those who accept some authority with the power to demand our obligation.
