Veto this years birthday and remain a year younger, perhaps by next year you'll be more financially stable. Or you could charge the party to your credit card and inform the invitees that you will have a money tree, at the party, where they are expected to pin cash to the branches with clothes pegs. Then use that accumulated money, to pay off your card.
If they were really your mates, they would throw the party.

My birthday was some time last week when I was totally broke. Prior to my b-day I told a couple of my friends that we have to meet up on my b-day. The day came and my pockets were empty. What did I do? I went with the flow. I text-ed a couple of friends and told them we should meet up at a club.We went to a club that had a promotion of giving away a bottle of champagne to a person on his/her birthday (but you have to proof it with an I.D).The champagne started the night and people took it upon themselves to buy their own drinks while I was dancing the night away and enjoying a few shooters from my bartender friends. So if you're not under-age, hitting a club with your mates and enjoying free entertainment, might be an option.

Well theres always the hinting of a suprise party to a friend.
Go out for a meal with your friends and ask them, instead of presents, ask your friends to bring money to contribute towards your split of the bill.
It might sound quite rude but im sure your friends would understand if you explained.
Alternatively, you could have a beach party. Theyre always good if you dont have any money.
I dont know if this has been any use to you but i hope it helps.
Whatever you end up doing, have fun!

How old will you be?
Dont let friends pressurize you. Its your day, so its up to you on how you spend it. If they are close mates, have a party but if they are not so close, do something with the family.
You could go to a theme park, bowling or to the cinema for your birthday. There are lots of options, not necessarily a party.

Be honest with them. Tell them that your birthday wish would be to spend time with your friends but that you don't even have money for snacks. Maybe they will put their heads together and come up with something or at the least ask to spend the day with you and eat before coming over. Seriously, you can buy cake mix, icing and koolaid mix for under $5.00. Good luck. I hope you have a good birthday, whatever you end up doing.

Ask each of your friends to bring something over instead of a present, like food and drink, music etc?
