He wants to see if he still has control over partner - if he dumps partner and partner comes running back or eventually takes him back when he comes running back to partner - he knows he's got complete control over partner. This isn't a relationship about love - it's about control. The partner would be much better off to keep on walking and never look back.

because he found it difficult to "highly control and possessive the partner"
he needed someone submiss and easily to manipulate and that partner was not it.

Probably found someone better or realized that all his/her affection (no matter how obsessive it is) is not fully aprreciated
