It did usted to be a luxary but with the requirements, even in the middle schools, that papers be NOT handwritten, that more extensive research be done (enough time is usually not available in the school library) having a computer in the home is a necessity! I have ahigh school freshman and have often wondered how those without one in their homes can meet the strict requirements that teachers now have for research papers, book reports, etc. My daughter comes home with papers and theme assignments bigger, more detailed and longer than any paper I was required to write in my SENIOR year of college!! WIthout a computer in our home she would not be able to even turn in the mininum requirements!!

It's really a luxury but I couldn't do without it now, it would be the last luxury I'd give up.

yes life was so good before i started getting into computers [around 1990!], unfortunately now i cant stay away, checking my emails, every hour ebaying every five minutes and researching stuff I Already know. [sad]
I think that it just takes over. it used to be a extravagant hobby, but now its a way of life, a need like bread and water.
although I'm not saying that I couldn't live without a PC, because I can its just that its there i feel compelled to make the most of it!
ITS ADDICTIVE

I only got one at home for the job. I used to do on-call work in the evening and weekends.
I don't have to any more, but I still occasionally do.

I view my computer as an "option". I could go to the library and use one and save the cost of the IP service, but that would be an inconvenience. So, I'll say it's an optional convenience. Good question.
