DIYDoc is right. They don't need an overflow that is "plumbed" in, but they all have an overflow tube for the water and ice that miss the glass and hit the tray/grid..

Everyone I've owned in the past 20 years has a line allowing water to drain to the floor pan.

I have two in mind at the moment. One is 15 years old; the other 23 years old. Both work as well as the day they were purchased and each is frost free, and has a tube running from mid height, to the pan.

You'll have to tell me more about, overflow pipe?? the hot water heater?? if it is, and water is coming out the emergency relief valve, you have a problem.. either the water heater thermostat is broke, over tempin the water, or just the valve has seen it's years, it has a manual release on it, has somebody used that lately? might have gotten dirt in it, use the release for a second, if the water comes blast-in out, it's to much pressure, or to hot. if it comes out like a faucet, just need replaced.
