ok so ive had my fish tank and fish since jan this yr. i had i little problem with ick in march but sorted all that out and my tanks been doing brillient since. it was only the other day that i was bragging how well theyve been doing. anyway i woke up this morning to find 4 fish dead, and a couple look like there on there way out. the tank feels really warm to touch and the water is really warm to, the thermometer isnt reading anythink, im thinking because the water is that warm its gone over scale on the thermometer. wot do i do? are the fish dying because of the heat of the water? has the temp of the water gone up because the heater is broke? please help i dont want any more fish to die.

Unplug the heater right away
If it is one which you can change the temperature on, turn it lower and test it

Fill up a bottle with water and put the heater in and plug it in, let it sit and see how warm the water gets

As for your fish, get a fan that blows directly to the tank and get the temperature down

If the temperature in the bottle gets higher then it's suppose to go, then your heater is definatley broken

Hope that helps
Good luck

If the water is over the scale on the thermeter, then it is WAY too hot in the tank. Put some cool water in and unplug your heater. Don't overdo it on the cool water, just put a gallon or so in. Sudden temperature change might kill the rest. If the water is still to warm, wait 15 minutes and put more cool water in. Unplug the heater. This time of year, you really don't need one, so don't even worry about it. Just replace it when you get a chance. Good luck.

Most tropical fish do not requires water with raised temperature and from what you described I think your fishes are being boiled alive. Suggest you take out the heater and observe any changes to the fish condition. At the mean time also observe if there are any spots, red or white or the fins are rotting. If that is the case then it is your fishes are infected. Treat it with antibiotics. Hope this will help and good luck.
